The Wii is a very tight system. There is little in the way of wasted space, which indicates an excellent design job. I am honestly impressed at how the creators of this device put all these pieces and parts together.

The Australian Consumers Association, Choice, has done a review of the Wii including a test of the original and the free replacement wrist straps, finding:

The original strap broke at 135 Newtons (N).

The newer strap didn’t break at up to 180 N. Even strenuous activity is
unlikely to break the new straps.

Looks like it’s definitely worth doing the replacement. If you’re in the US, you can go to this page to find out more about replacing that strap.

After an interview posted early Tuesday morning in the Melbourne Age, SCE Australia boss Michael Ephraim was quoted on American and English gaming sites for what have been construed as controversial remarks on the various price points for next-gen consoles – particularly in reader comments. It’s a shame when honest responses are punished in such a way, and leads to the usual sound-bite PR mentality that gamers and journalists profess to rail against. You can read Ephraim’s response to the hoo-ha here.

So it was just a code-name: Nintendo intends to stage a Revolution by Wii-ing on people? That one can “Wii” by waving a wand-like device around? (Okay, I’m done with the puns.) Seriously though, I think it’s time their Marketing department took a long, hard look at themselves in the mirror.

“Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.”

Oh yeah? You know, “wee” means something else in a whole lot of languages. I suppose it does encourage a kind of brand recognition, although perhaps it won’t be the sort they might be hoping for. There’s a difference between fame and infamy.

Gamers are taking issue with the fact that while Nintendo repeatedly say they want to appeal to people who aren’t playing video games, they seem to be making themselves unappealing to people who do. But I ask you: if you’re a non-gamer, are you really going to put up with having Wii in your living room? Under your television?

“Fancy a beer?”
“Nah, I think I’m gonna go home and hit the Wii instead.”

“Man, I wish I could carry my Wii around on the bus with me. When do you think they’re gonna make that shit portable?”

“Kids! Did you leave your Wii in the middle of the living room floor again?”

&c.

It has to be said though, that the end of their press statement is quite touching (“And together, Wii will change everything”), and this could indeed be something we get uncomfortably comfortable with.

Through all of this, it has to be said that Penny Arcade are more prophetic than even they give themselves credit for.

Nintendo Wee by any other name…

Well, they’ve gone and done it. In my review of Warioware: Twisted! I suggested that Nintendo incorporate the motion-sensitive feature of the game into more of their library: specifically driving games. Now they’ve gone and done it. I’m all for innovative gaming and, if you’ll re-read my post, I in fact CALL on them to do use my idea. I seem to recall, however, asking for credit and millions of dollars for my idea. Is that too much to ask?

Not only that, but IGN have stolen my characterisation of the “rumble” feature of Twisted as more of a “rattle”. I just discovered that they described the rumble of the DS rumble-pack bundled with Metroid Prime Pinball and Mario and Luigi: Partners In Time as a “chirp”.

Is there no justice in the world? Who ever will save me?
